In Ecstaticus, I reference the hairshirt, a garment worn under normal clothing by the devout to transcend flesh through its mortification. Although most people now find the idea of hair shirts anachronistic, men and women still choose to engage in uncomfortable and painful rituals with the intention of improving themselves. Centuries pass, but our willingness to suffer for beauty, whether spiritual or physical, remains.
