The female saints I reference in my work were all violently killed, but rather than focus on the circumstances of their gruesome deaths, I used the random details of their sparsely recorded life histories to provide me with a way to present them as more than simply objects of spectacle. Their stories were my points of departure. In Apollonia’s Part-time Job, I examine the similarity between the faith placed in the patron saint of dentists and a folk heroine who is an enduring fixture in American mythology, the tooth fairy. The piece is a reliquary, a format that reveals the potential power of any object, no matter how insignificant or absurd.
