Thorn and Shield (click to see full collection)
This bold statement necklace is part of my new series of jewelry inspired by historical shield forms. Composed of sterling silver chain and five brass 1" x 1" shields hand-stamped with a dotted pattern.
Heater shields were a late medieval adaptation of the kite shields used by Norman soldiers during the Battle of Hastings in 1066 (as seen depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry). The lighter and more manageable form of the heater shield allowed for easier maneuvering on the battlefield and developed into specialized shields for jousting in the 15th century.
